Syrian Cuisine Recipes: Syrian Desserts and Sweets

Syrian cuisine is known for its rich flavors and variety of delicious dishes, including mouthwatering desserts and sweets. In this blog post, we will explore some traditional Syrian dessert recipes that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.

1. Baklava: Baklava is a popular dessert in Syrian cuisine, made with layers of phyllo dough, chopped nuts, and sweet syrup. To make baklava, start by layering sheets of phyllo dough brushed with melted butter and sprinkled with a mixture of chopped nuts (such as pistachios or walnuts). Repeat the layering process until all the phyllo dough and nuts are used up. Bake the baklava in the oven until golden brown, then drizzle with a sweet syrup made of sugar, water, and a hint of lemon juice. Let the baklava cool before serving.

2. Ma'amoul: Ma'amoul is a traditional Syrian cookie filled with dates, nuts, or a sweet mixture of semolina and sugar. To make ma'amoul, combine semolina flour, all-purpose flour, sugar, and butter to form a crumbly dough. Shape the dough into small balls, then flatten each ball and fill it with a spoonful of date or nut mixture. Press the edges of the dough together to seal the filling inside, then bake the cookies until lightly golden. Dust the ma'amoul with powdered sugar before serving.

3. Basbousa: Basbousa is a moist and dense semolina cake soaked in sweet syrup, often flavored with rose water or orange blossom water. To make basbousa, combine semolina flour, sugar, yoghurt, and melted butter to form a thick batter. Spread the batter in a baking dish and bake until golden brown. While the basbousa is still warm, pour a hot sugar syrup over the cake, allowing it to soak in and infuse the dessert with sweetness and moisture. Serve the basbousa topped with chopped nuts for added texture.

4. Halawet el Jibn: Halawet el Jibn is a delectable Syrian dessert made with a stretchy and elastic cheese dough filled with sweet cream and drizzled with sugar syrup. To make Halawet el Jibn, prepare the cheese dough by combining akawi cheese with cornstarch and a touch of rose water. Roll out the dough into thin sheets, then fill each sheet with a creamy mixture of milk, sugar, and cornstarch. Roll the dough into cylinders and place the filled rolls in a serving dish. Drizzle the Halawet el Jibn with sugar syrup infused with rose water, and garnish with pistachios before serving.
